Hello everyone! The weather is finally starting to get warm around here and I am looking for some new ideas. My 6 year old has dance every Thursday morning in town until 11:00 am so I told the kids that on nice days we can have a picnic after ballet class. What do you guys pack for a picnic with lots of young ones? We do the standard PB & J, pretzles and fruit, but that gets boring after awhile (not to mention this is one of our standard lunches at home! LOL!). Sometimes I break down and get a couple of $5.00 pizzas, but that is a rare treat. We usually only do water bottles for drinks--and the less messy the better! So, any ideas?

Salads work really well in big tupperware bowls and serve 'em out on paper plates. (or bring your own.) Pasta salads, different green salads, etc... Sandwhich wraps, tortillas filled with various veggies, meats and cheeses. Pitas are good for sandwhich variation. That's all off the top of my head, I'll think on it a bit more as we are going to be out for lunch on Wednesdays from now on.

Take notes, Ladies! Lovely notes!

I'll be hosting the The Loveliness of Taking Meals Out of Doors on June 4, just a little heads up!

As we venture outside for our first picnics this spring and take those adorable photos and post about the first spring wildflowers we discover by the checkered blanket spread on the grass while noshing on PB&J's, go ahead and post the story! 'Cause I'll be bugging you for entries, sooner rather than later as it turns out!

My children call this "Round Lunch" and think it's a huge treat....

I purchased a plastic relish dish at the dollar store. We put a different item in each section....chunks of cheese, pickles, carrots, grape tomatoes, different fruits, crackers, etc. It is never the same thing twice and the children think it's neat to choose their own items.

It's called Round Lunch because the dish is round....not terribly clever, I know!

I think you just created a new, "round" family picnic tradition for us, Marie! I love it!

I love the "Round Lunch" idea! I think the kids will too--we'll have to try it next week and I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for the idea--I knew there were clever moms here!

fried chicken is a nice easy to take thing.. doesn't even have to be whole pieces.. but rather grilled or friend chicken that's cut into slices.. add sliced cheese and various finger veggies and fruit.. and a cracker or bread to eat the cheese and chicken on.

We also like a layer dip (the 7-layer, mexican kind.. refried beans, sour cream, cheese, lettuce, onion, tomato/salsa, black olives) and chips or crackers to scoop with.

The Round Lunch is a great idea! I was going to suggest thinly sliced lunch meat or sliced salami. We don't use it in sandwiches, the kids just like to snack on it plain or sometimes they will use the meat as the wrap with cheese or whatever else inside.

I'm so excited for picnic season.

Though I am not sure I qualify for the large family forum ;) - here is my picnic food.

We go for mess free since I have 2 22 mos olds, a 3 yo and a 5 yo. Calzones. Homemade yeasty pizza crust filled with whatever you want but leave OFF the sauce. Made into small single serving sized so they can eat them in their carseats (I know - no eating in the van) without making a huge mess :)

I love the round lunch idea.

Have you tried the Round Lunch yet? I'd love to include it and other ideas in the Loveliness Fair if you have!

Send submissions to me at lettso3 AT yahoo DOT com please!

I don't really qualify for the More the Merrier forum, I just popped in to check out this thread. I am glad I did because I love the round lunch idea! I think it will work great for the pool this summer! Thanks for a wonderful idea!
