Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone have any picture books of the seasons they recommend? My ds is really enjoying the change of seasons and discussing the changes we see outside. I wanted to get him some books but my library's selection seems very limited.

Thanks!

The Seasons of Arnold's Apple Tree is a good book for following the changing seasons related to trees.

I have three suggestions. Two by Tasha Tudor: A Time to Keep: The Tasha Tudor Book of Holidays and Around the Year.

The other is the Caldecott Medal award winner, and a classic and favorite The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton.

Oh, Jenn, how could I have forgotten "A Time to Keep"? It is one of our favorite books and has had a profound influence on our family's games, play, and even poetry selections. That's a "must have" without a doubt.

The Year At Maple Hill Farm is our favorite. It can be read at two levels, one for read aloud (smaller type), and another for read alone (larger type). The pictures are great--American folk art.

I am a newbie, but I had to jump in and respond to this post. I have a real soft spot for books about the seasons

One of my favorites is a book called Be Blest: A Celebration of the Seasons by Mary Beth Owens. For each month there is a simple blessing reflecting the season. The illustrations are absolutley beautiful wildlife scenes. The book jacket says the author traveled to Assisi and was inspired by the Canticle of the Sun. As St. Francis happens to be our patron saint it is no wonder we love this book so!

From the Murphy home:

Chicken Soup With Rice (Sendak)
The Little House (Burton)
The Year at Maple Hill Farm (Provensen)
Frog and Toad All Year (Lobel)
Tasha Tudor books
Four Stories for Four Seasons (de Paola)
Why do Leaves Change Color? (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out)
Discover America State by State Alphabet series
One Lighthouse, One Moon (Lobel)

and our favorite, Berenstain Bears' Big Book of Science and Nature---this does a great job of explaining the different attributes of the seasons, all in rhyme (!), and without the characteristic disrespect shown to Papa Bear found in the story books.

We were on vacation at a friend's house this past week. They had The Year at Maple Tree Farm which was a huge hit with my ds. Thanks for all the suggestions. We will be well stocked!

I am going to get the Tasha Tudor for myself. Hopefully my ds will come around on those.
