I love finding another great picture book... my kids are older now, but we still read them all the time. I think a good picture book is truly classic.
Just last week we read Rocks in His Head which is my favorite pb of the last 6 months, and possibly in my all time top ten.
Why? I loved everything about it... the pictures, the dad's positive attitude through all kinds of trials, and the best part... that it's a true story!
What an utterly cool tale... you have to read the author's note in the back to appreciate fully how great this story is. I won't spoil the surprise ... just go read it!!
Oh- and the Giveaways for this forum are.... got so excited about the rocks I almost forgot ...
The Story About Ping
Little Tim and the Sea Captain
Cranberry Thanksgiving
Angel in the Waters
Make Way For Ducklings

We discovered Brother Hugo and the Bear at the library, and enjoyed it very much! It takes you through the process of medieval book-making, with a silly story about the bear woven in. At least, we thought it was silly until we read the author's note at the end... maybe not so far-fetched after all!

Oh my gosh...there is no way I could pick just one!
So in October I started doing the Picture Book Challenge that got pinned on Pinterest (100 new-to-you picture books in 6 months). I lost steam and need to get back to that, but did find some great books end of last year.
My favorites:
***The Bicycle and the Girl
Manger
Flight School
Mr. Ferris and His Wheel
The Right Word: Roget and His Theasarus
Honorable mentions:
Hunters of the Great Forest
The Grudge Keepers

It was a very spontaneous purchase! Just because I had been reading so much from Sigrid Undset and then Suzanne bumped a thread on Race of the Birkebeiners , and I do love the illustrator, I just clicked "BUY".
It all happened so fast A wonderful book.

I was confused if this was PB PUBLISHED in the last 6 months but realized no... it was just favorites. A few new-to-me books in the last 6 months that I loved were:
Winter is Coming...gorgeous, evocative, living, real... very Charlotte Mason appropriate.
And like Mary, I loved The Girl and the Bicycle too... nice tones throughout the wordless book and a sweet message of generosity. Have you seen The Boy and the Airplane too?
I was also really impressed with A Home for Mr. Emerson. There are so many great picture book biographies nowadays... it's really exciting! I'm fairly convinced that I could teach an entire, complete and wholesome curriculum using just picture books all the way up to grade 6.
And I really loved Some Bugs. It's just a very simple, very colorful basic bug book... exceptional rhyming. But mostly I love it because my 3 year old son just broke into the most delighted smile every time I read it. That... is a win.

I love so many! Some favorites that I'm about to dive back into with the boys are Jan Brett's books:
Mossy (because we did a turtle unit in December and got to visit a sea turtle facility)
And because we're studying northern Europe:
Berlioz the Bear
Trouble with Trolls
The Mitten
The Hat
The Wild Christmas Reindeer
Who's that Knocking on Christmas Eve?
Hedgie's Surprise
I love that she uses so much COLOR and has intricate borders on many of the pages.

Don't have time for links right now, but:
Aunt Pitty Patty's Piggy
The Tale of Tricky Fox
The Kiss That Missed
The Cat Who Wore a Pot on Her Head
Mostly funny, fluff, and fun. But, not fluff that is bad example, KWIM.

Best of the last month (can't remember six months ago!)
Locomotive (so beautiful, and has fit together nicely with reading By the Shores of Silver Lake with my oldest)
Lentil (who knew there were so many vehicles in it for truck-obsessed toddlers)
Soup Day

Wow - this is a really tough one as we have so many that we have read and loved;
Saturdays and Teacakes by Lester Laminack - I just love this book and the illustrations. Makes me yearn for a past era. Makes me want to move to a small country town. My kids got me my own copy - my 5 year old tells everyone that mom wants a "grandma house" like the one in the book.
Favorite Christmas basket books - probably An Orange for Frankie (I always cry reading it out aloud), Christmas Tapestry (always cry for this one too) and Angela and the Baby Jesus (my husband always reads this one with a broad Irish accent which makes the kids giggle - but the story never fails to make me cry...again)
Early Bird by Toni Yuli - my daughter received this from her godmother. We love picture books about birds (have a house full of ornithologists here) - and I love this book. I am an early bird too...so I love it...

The kids all laugh out loud at It Could Have Been Worse.
We all agreed that the story and pictures in The Matchbox Diary are wonderful.
And The Boy Who Loved Math was a fun, educational find.
And not discovered so recently as the last six months, but a favorite here is Boxes for Katje.
We've read so many, but these popped into my mind when I read the poll.

We have had a recent fascination with the Revolutionary war, and this book was such a find! Red Coats and Petticoats.
