Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I found The Struggle For A Continent through Mary M's history picture book thread, and now I am just hooked on this author's history books.

The illustrations really make the book, IMO. I was really struggling to find visuals for the French and Indian War for my dc, and this book came through! I was delighted to find cameo-type portraits of some of the main players: Chief Pontiac, the Marquis de Montcalm, General Wolfe and General Amherst.

My favorite picture is the British army struggling up the steep mountain to the Plains of Abraham for the Battle of Quebec. It really gave us a sense of how it happened. Ds spent a long time studying these pictures.

We then went back and read her book for the 1600's... so many great illustrations again. We have been listening to "Calico Captive", and this book fits perfectly with it, giving us pictures for the coureurs de bois and voyageurs as well as many of the Indian tribes.

Thanks for the tip, Mary!

Yes, we really like her books too! Sometimes they get a bit PC....but I change the wording sometimes, and then bring in various "catholic resources" that can temper what she's saying and give the catholic or christian view.

Yep- I find that as a read aloud they are not as "living" as other books, and I do skip around in the text and/or rephrase at times. Still, such a great resource, and the pictures can't be beat!
