Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi all,

We've recently been loving the newest book by Lauren Stringer When Stravinsky Met Nijinsky (I posted a more comprehensive review of it on my blog). It's made me realize that there isn't a whole lot of material for children out there on composers if you aren't Beethoven, Bach, Haydn, or Mozart. If you know of any picture books celebrating less famous composers could you kindly share them?

(FYI: I did notice that while Vivaldi isn't a "nobody", there is a newish book about the Four Seasons by the excellent Anna Harwell Celenza...)

What a wonderful find! My daughter is adopted from Russia, so we like to read about different Russian composers. Put that one on my wish list!

As far as book suggestions, I have a couple, although they may not be picture books, but I read parts of them to first-third graders at a camp and they found them interesting. We like the "Famous Children" series; they have them for Brahms, Chopin, Shubert, in addition to Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Handel, etc. Kids like learning about the lives of other kids, and this series gives kids a glimpse into the childhood of famous composers.

We also like "Lives of the Musicians: Good Times, Bad Times and What the Neighbors Thought."

I am keeping my eyes open and would love to see some great suggestions as well. I've run across a couple that might fit the bill. Need to look those up again and post.

Meanwhile - just read this book. Unfortunately it is not a "lesser known" composer - it is Haydn, but it is a really great book I hadn't seen before.

The Boy Who Loved Music. Very entertaining picture book based on the historical facts of the composition of Haydn's "Farewell" Symphony in 1772.

I'd love to find one about Rachmaninoff, personally! I do have Rachmaninoff (Illustrated Lives of the Great Composers) but it isn't exactly a great read-aloud. Although we did enjoy looking through it together and studying the pictures when we were learning about him. I think he has a great personal story though, and I'd love to see a retelling of his life for children. I've thought about writing one, but don't think it will actually come to fruition until I'm no longer having babies!

Thanks for the link to the Stravinsky book! That would have been fun to read together when we were learning about him last year. I'll have to get it when we study him again. Or maybe I should just get it now in case it goes out of print... hee hee

I always like to find composer and artist biographies for children. You really have to be careful with current publications because so often these artists had a lifestyle that could or could have been same gender issue. Some are confirmed, others are being considered because of the revisionist ideas -- seems like anyone who had troubled marriages or didn't marry now are this kind of leaning.

Anyway, you know what I mean! Just use some caution!
