We have a major bug phobia going here that's threatening to call a halt to all spring and summer outdoor play, never mind nature study. I'm planning an intensive picture book FIAR-ish binge in the next few weeks. What are your favorite insect-themed picture books?

I don't have a lot of time, as I am about to head out the door, but my children and I enjoy the Let's-Read-and-Find-Out series. Some of their bug books include: Bugs are Insects, Ant Cities, What Color is Camouflage. The last one discusses more than just insects.
If I think of anything else, I will post it when I get back.

It's not a bug story but our family totally gets into Usborne's The Great Wildlife Search...
The illustrations are totally vivid and detailed. Sometimes, there are little facts about whatever you're searcing for...
I'll try and think of others but have to go now...

My kids like all the Eric Carle books about insects. I don't know if there is some arachnaphobia going on too, but if there is, my kids like "Miss Spider's Tea Party" and "The Eensy Weensy Spider" (Mary Ann Hoberman).

"Insectlopedia" by Douglas Florian is full of cute poems about insects. My kids like it alot and so do I.
Of course there are the Eric Carle books.
The "One small Square" series has good stuff about insects in it. I like the "Backyard" one.
Not insects, but "Spiders Spin Webs," by Yvonne Winer has beautiful illustrations of different spiders and a lovely poetic text.
I will try to think of more.

The Story of the Root-Children
We love this book! It's an old book (1906) about the little flower-children who sleep all winter long under the earth. When they wake in the spring they first sew their little frocks and then wash and paint the ladybirds, bees and beetles in their care.
Then, with all the little bugs in tow, the flower-children go frolic in the woods, meadow, pond etc. (For instance the lily-of-the-valley finds a cool spot in the woods, the water-lily sets down in the pond.) The book shows lots of *friendly* little insects (fairly realistically drawn) playing with and helping the children.
It's really a nice nature study for little ones!

Dover has a Little Activity Book called Learning About Insects. It's *Peter Rabbit* sized and the child peels off an insect sticker and inserts it in the square above a blurb about each insect.
We did a "Creepy Crawlie" unit when Garrett was in 4-H. Your 4-H office should have an Creepy Crawlie insect book which is good for cut-outs, projects, and notebooking.
We also used a reproducible book from "Early Themes" called Creepy Crawlies. It has a full size poster plus lots of fun reproducibles to go in your lapbook/notebook. Also, at the very back is a complete Miss Spider's Tea Party for an end-of-study celebration.

Bees, Bugs, and Beetles: The Arrow Book of Insects, by Ronald Rood (it's not really a picture book, but it is informative).
Moths, Butterflies, Other Insects, & Spiders: Science in Art, Song, and Play is a book that I bought when I was teaching and still use with my own children.
If my memory serves me correctly, Louisa May Alcott's Flower Fables has a story that would be appropriate, too.
Finally, have you considered ordering caterpillars or something from Insect Lore, so that your children can learn about the life cycle of an insect.

Two books we enjoyed and remember well are:
The Butterfly Alphabet by Sandved
The Butterfly Alphabet Book by Jerry Pallotta.
The first is pictures of wings, some through microscopes with the ABC's in the wing design, very beautiful and might encourage getting a closer look at the insect world.
The second lists a butterfly for every letter and I remember I was amazed at how many scientific names were actually local dialect for the word butterfly.

I posted on my blog about a beautiful book called All Things Bright and Beautiful.
It's not specifically about insects but it does show how all things are made by God and have their place in the world. Gorgeous illustrations!

O.K. one more title and then I'll stop.  The Icky Bug Alphabet. And not all the bugs are icky ~ there are butterflies, ladybugs, crickets and katydids etc.

We just did a mini-unit on ladybugs after Maggie (6) caught "Sal".
Here are the books we really liked. (Sorry they're not linked, I'm using my FIL's hook-up and I'm lucky I can get this much on here  !)
- The Very Lazy Ladybug by Isobel Finn
- A Ladybug's Life by John Himmelman
- Are You a Ladybug by Judy Allen
- Starting Life as a Ladybug by Claire Llewellyn
- Life of the Ladybug by Heiderose and Andreas Fischer-Nagel (this was a really GREAT one with graduated pages like Eric Carle's "hungry caterpillar")
- Ladybugs by M.C. McBee
- Ladybug by Barrie Watts
- Insectolopedia by Douglas Florian

My 11 year old ds claims his favorite bug book for browsing is "The Big Book of Bugs" by Matthew Robertson. It's a huge tome, and comes with 3-D glasses, slightly florid illustrations, and is horribly organizized---no table of contents or anything---BUT it's great fun for browsing. It's one of those books we've "loved to death" over the years, a big crowd-pleaser with lots of general information.
We also enjoyed the picture book, "Lady Bugatti", though it really doesn't teach much about bugs, per se.

Two I grew up with that I still love:
Terry and the Caterpillars (about moths) by Millicent E. Selsam, illustrated by Arnold Lobel
and Insects Do the Strangest Things by Leonora Hornblow.
Both of these are OOP, but it's been easy to find copies.
