Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

It started when we (my 2nd-grader and I) read "The Josefina Story Quilt" a beginner reader/historical fiction by Eleanor Coerr. But being who I am, I had to search the library for related picture books, and I wanted to share some of my findings:

"The Buffalo Storm" by Katherine Applegate -- particularly interesting because like "Josefina," it's about a pioneer girl going west.

"Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt" by Deborah Hopkinson -- Clara's quilt is actually a map for runaway slaves on the Underground Railroad.

"The Quiltmaker's Gift" by Jeff Bumbreau -- lovely story about generosity and gorgeous illustrations. Actually this is one of my favorite books, so it is in our personal collection, not from the library!

"The Quilting Bee" by Gail Gibbons -- story that illustrates step by step how quilts are made and has lots of examples of quilt square patterns.

"A Far-Fetched Story" by Karin Cates -- very fun for read-aloud time. Poor grandmother can't get anyone to fetch more wood but in the end, she keeps the family warm by making a quilt instead.

I'm sure there are more. But we're moving on now....
Enjoy.

Can't beleive there hasn't been a quilt thread in the Picture Book forum. It's a great topic - unit study. Thanks for starting it, MB.

I know you said you are moving on, but some other quilt picture books we enjoyed, just to add for future reference on the topic if anyone is interested.

The Promise Quilt by Candice Ransom (Civil War)

Under the Quilt of Night by Deborah Hopkinso (Underground Railroad, similar to Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt and by same author)

The Log Cabin Quilt by Ellen Howard (Pioneer, westward expansion)

Selina and the Bear Paw Quilt by barbara Claassen Smucker (Civil War - love the illustrations with quilt pattern borders)

The Quilt Story by Tony Johnson, illustrated by Tomie dePaola

The Keeping Quilt by Patricia Polacco (Immigrants)

Eight Hands Round: A Patchwork Alphabet by Ann Whitford Paul (alphabet book)

Reuben and the Quilt by Merle Good (Amish country)

Not a story book, but a great activity picture book with history of quilts.
The Quilt-Block History of Pioneer Days: with projects kids can make by Mary Cobb
