Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

To start out a thread for Black History Month, I wanted to highlight George Washington Carver. We recently read the new picture book on him and his work, as told through the eyes of a school girl who learns about soil and planting from him. It has lovely nature study-ish illustrations in the cover pages.

Some other picture books biographies of him:

A Man for All Seasons: The Life of George Washington Carver - Stephen Krensky (This is a favorite)
A Weed is a Flower: The Life of George Washington Carver - Aliki
A Picture Book of George Washington Carver - David Alder

Any others to add? Other resources on GWC?

We just read this today and really enjoyed it. There is overt mentioning of nature study throughout, and my boys really identified with the drawings and mention of nature study. My younger son said "Nature Study! Just like us!"

My son LOVES GW Carver! He just finished this book:
"George Washington Carver : from slave to scientist" by Janet Benge.

It is a chapter book, and he highly recommends it.
