I happened to pick up this book and am so glad I did.....The book talks about a mother and her two sons, who end up going to war...on opposite sides....and how her sage advice wins out in the end....It is short, rich illustrations, and a great story with so many good conversation starters....

This is the description on Amazon:

K-Gr. 3. First published in 1967, this picture book introduces two brothers who are lured by the trappings of glory to become the commanders of opposing armies. After they lead their soldiers to war in their mother's own garden, they learn to value family and food more than fighting.

Funny..I just picked this up from the library...I didn't even get a chance to read this thread and I was in the picture book section of our library nursing the baby and I just saw the title and said...hmmm...that must be the book that was posted on 4real...LOL ...so it came home...

I actually came across this book earlier this spring. I can't remember how I found it (think I was looking at Caldecott artists). It was intriguing because it was an "old" book I had never heard of but obviously just repritnted. It makes sense that it was written in the 60s. We did enjoy it very much as well.
