Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

A is for Arrr!!! A Pirate Alphabet

We just read this from the library. This is definitely a "living" book about pirates... the photos give a very real sense of what pirates were like.
I thought it very realistic and fun. My ds was a little less sure of it... could be the pirates made him nervous.

Shiver Me Letters is a much tamer version, though still fun

Pirate Diary

just got this one -- we have the Castle Diary (from the same author/illustrator team, and now i feel bad that we have the paperback version of Castle Diary. Pirate Diary is large and full-color! i also read a review on amazon that expressed disappointment about the paperback mostly b&w versions.

i'm still vacillating as to whether it's a good thing to have the kids read pirate books (what's redeemable about these guys?), but it is fun.

Whoa!

We are currently doing an Africa Unit Study and I stumbled across this book:

Real Pirates: The Untold Story of The Whydah -- From Slave Ship to Pirate Ship -- I haven't read the whole book yet but looks like a must read for pirate-lovers (I do want to warn that there are the usual pirate images throughout the book (fighting, skulls and skeletons, etc.). The author wrote another book in 2000 that has good reviews (mostly) on Amazon that seems to be geared for ages 9-12; I've reserved it at the lib -- if anyone has read it and has comments, please share!

And yay! We will be in St. Louis this weekend and it just so happens that the Whydah exhibit is there, through August! So I guess now you know where we'll be on Saturday!
