Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This is the true story of a baby who survives the Alaska wilderness in 1917. We LOVE this book and read it every winter!!!

Quote:
Traveling from Fairbanks to Seattle in midwinter, Marie Boyer and her two daughters, Betty and Ann, are among passengers and freight tossed into an icebound river when the horses pulling their big sleigh panic. Betty is pulled under the ice and Ann, in her snug basket, vanishes in the Arctic dark. Rescued, Betty and the other passengers are comforted at a nearby lodge while a desperate search is mounted to find Ann. At the last moment, two trappers arrive to a joyous reception, carrying basket and baby Ann, discovered sliding down the river atop the ice, pushed by the freezing wind.

I love this book so much. The story, the scene, the family love, the Rands' illustrations (love love love them), the DRAMA!    I think it is more for me than the kids....

I just decided to check if my memory was correct and I learned that Ted Rand died in 2005 at 89.    A few of his and some of his wife's other books are listed here, http://www.artofillustration.com/rand.html.
