Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

As part of our current rabbit trail on snow and ice, we have been reading some ice skating books. Tonight we enjoyed The Greatest Skating Race by Louise Borden. This is a lovely picture book that recounts the heroic skate of a young boy helping two Dutch children escape from the Germans during WWII. I loved the courage and sense of responsibility that were demonstrated by the main character, a boy of 10. There is also some geographical information about Holland, historical information about the Elfstedentocht race and the history of skating, and a map of the region. This book was a lovely addition to our studies, and is especially interesting for young boys. There was also a courageous young girl in the story. I'd recommend it for children 7 or 8 and up to about 11 or 12.

We haven't been able to get to the library in a while and I am longing to get this book out again this year! I am especially anxious to get it because we have started skating this year
