I was lamenting in another thread that my dc did not like "Five Little Peppers and How They Grew".

However, I did find an abridged, illustrated version of it at the library sale last fall and pulled it off the shelves a couple of days ago. It has good pictures, and the language is more easily read. My dc are loving it now! They asked for it at tea time today.

Basically the same story, though not the classic version. Is that cheating?

I have always believed that illustrations are hugely important at this age. I avoid books with pictures that are scary or "weird" or just ugly.

I wonder if there are other books that my dc might be more interested in if the presentation were changed...

I've had similar experiences. The first time this was illustrated to me was when my oldest dd was 9, I really wanted her to read 'Seven Little Australians'

and she thought the book looked boring. I stumbled across a coloured illustrated copy at a garage sale! She was hooked and then read all the sequels.

I now grab illustrated copies whenever I see them. They do make a difference.

We actually did an illustration comparison twice - my children really enjoyed looking at artists' concepts of the two stories. The first was the poem A Visit From St. Nicholas and the second was the book The Wizard of Oz - with the latter, we also watched the film. Very interesting and fun!

My biggest example of this is Winnie-the-Pooh. I picked up a copy of this with very few pictures and my boys didn't care for it. They groaned when I picked up the E.H. Sheppard illustrated version, but LOVED it when they saw inside when we read.

I was away when this topic started in Dec. so didn't see it. I very much think the art and illustrations make a huge difference - especial as we are talking picture books here. We definitely are drawn to picture books based on the illustrations. I had thought at several times to start a thread called "Judging a book by it's cover" because I certainly do that when it comes to picture books. Like you Melinda, there are ones I outright avoid because of the cover art and illustrations. The stories might be good, but I often don't give it a chance unless someone recommends it. And I find that I am often drawn to certain illustrations and only make the connection later that I have liked several books by this particular illustrator. Then when you are familiar with an illustrator you start to recognize it when you see it on a new book. I often get it just for the illustrator - sometimes I'm disappointed that the story doesn't match the quality of the illustrations.
