Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

OK- so I thought we might start in January to have a book theme or two each month. We could pick two topics, and everyone can add their favorite books on the topic to the thread (like Suzanne G- thank you!- has done for Epiphany). These book theme threads would then become valuable resources that we could post as a permanent sticky for reference.

So- any ideas for January?
Epiphany has a thread... are there any other religious feasts we want to cover for January?

Other options: snow/winter books (ie, snowflake theme), MLK Jr, Chinese New Year...

Add your suggestions over the next week and we can decide sometime around New Year's Eve...

Also...the Iditarod has a thread.

I would be interested in a thread on Martin Luther King Day. Included in this topic, I would be interested to hear about and find resources on black saints (Martin de Porres, Joephine Bakita) and saints that served black people (Peter Claver). I would also be interested to learn of church documents that discuss race and equality.

Reading it, this seems like a big request but I just know there are ladies here who can fill in the pieces!

I was also thinking of MLK, and I think the black saints would also be very interesting. Thanks for your input!

I just finished last night Amos Fortune, Freeman by Elizabeth Yates. It is a Newberry winning biography. Not a picture book by any means, probably more for 6th grade or so, but a good, true, story about an African-born slave who earns his freedom in Revolutionary-era New England. I would recommend it for a reader who can tolerate quiet, thoughtful books.

That sounds really good- book marking for future reference. Thanks!

I did a quick search- I can't believe we've never had a thread here for Martin Luther King, Jr. picture books.   Since his holiday is in January, I think we should definitely have a thread for him. There are lots of PBs around on his life.

Mary pointed out that February is Black History month. Should we save our discussion of black saints and friends until then?

If so- what other topic would you like to discuss for January?

Some other options:

Favorite PB biographies (I found an old thread on this topic with some great links to start us off)
PB astronomy/Stars: the winter sky is a good time to star gaze (plus it is dark early for littles)
Chinese New Year/ New Year in general
North/South pole and explorers

Other ideas?
