I fell in love with a new Christmas picture book, Christmas Day in the Morning by Pearl S. Buck (read a bit about here here).
I think this is such a wonderful one especially if you have sons. The basic premise is a man wakes up early at 4:00 am and remembers a Christmas on the family farm when he was 15. It's a story of how he gave a gift of love, from the heart, for his father. The reason for his gift was at that time he realized how he loved his father, and that his father loved him. (Funny how we know things intuitively or subconsciously, but when it becomes in the front brain matter, it spurs on action!)
It sounds rather schmaltzy typing it out, but it is a lovely story, and very inspiring. I could see how my son really liked the description of his gift of doing something for his father.
I checked the book from the library and ordered one for home because I think this is one to have on the home shelves. 2 Thumbs Up!

We got this for a gift last year and it is a big favorite at our house, too!

This is a great book, Jen! We love it, and it does so encourage thoughtfulness in young boys.
One of my favorite books as a child was Fairy Tales of the Orient by Pearl S. Buck. My grandmother gave it to me, and now my daughter loves it, too!
ETA: Of course, it has nothing to do with Christmas!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this book!!! I tear up every time!
It was one of the first books I purchased from an used online amazon bookseller several years ago! Isn't it weird to remember that? And, was also one of the first Christmas picutre books I bought when I was a new mom!! I LOVED IT at first sight and knew it was def. one for the shelves!
It's the same illustrator, Mark Buehner as Snowmen at Night and Snowmen at Christmas and !This First Thanksgiving Day...a couple favs too! Love his illustrations!!

So why didn't you share before????
I did forget to warn that you might get choked up on this book. Happens to me, too.

This gets back to the why don't you post books thread...I actually had just finished reading this books to my little boys yesterday, and thought, "Hum, maybe I should post it...it is such a great book....but, surely, someone else has already posted it...it's Pearl S. Buck, after all, not some obscure author..." and I didn't post. Ditto for several other books; I just don't know what has and has not already been posted in the last few years. Maybe that shouldn't matter? Just glad YOU posted it! Thanks!

I was thinking about this and realized that you can't search for a book you don't know about. So it's always helpful to post a book you like even if it's already been posted. I guess we could try to search for it and bump the old thread but most of us haven't been around since the beginning and we might have missed the original recommendation.

Don't forget to have fun with the "hidden pictures" in the clouds on the cover and the 2-page-spread in the middle of the book....."boy-walking-to-barn-in-the-dark." He's so good with the hidden pictures!

And, Snowmen at Night and Snowmen at Christmas have GREAT hidden pictures too! On each painting, there is a hidden cat, rabbit, santa face, T-rex, and mouse.

We love this book too. We've had it since my oldest (16) was pretty small so we've read it a lot and I still get choked up each time I read it. It's definitely one of my favorites.
