For years I've seen some of these books in antique stores and remember seeing them on the shelves at family and friends houses. These are small hardbound books with black and white silhouettes on the front cover and the spine, with the spine having various colors. The covers never were really inviting, so I never knew what was the big deal about these books.
After all these years I bought a few and peeked inside -- and they are a goldmine!
I found this detailed explanation and list of books and illustrators. 40 volumes! And several picture books condensed in each volume!
Many of the illustrations are the same as the original book, sometimes adapted into two-color reprints. And here's a snippet about the illustrators:
Quote:
For a researcher in children's literature, perhaps the most intriguing part of the series is the illustrators. Their names are not given on the table of contents page, but are found only on the title page of the individual story. Because of this lack of credit, most of the illustrations done in this series are not mentioned in bibliographies of the artists' work. Thanks to the efforts of art director Diana Klemin, many now-famous illustrators did some of their earliest work in this series, including Maurice Sendak, Ezra Jack Keats, Peter Spier, Barbara Cooney, Feodor Rojankovsky, Richard Scarry, and even Andy Warhol. |

It's amusing to me how I wouldn't have thought much about these books until now, since I love these various picture books and illustrators. It takes new perspectives on some familiar things to help!
Oh, and I missed that Vintage Children's Books also reviewed these.

Thank you, Jenn, for posting this. I was not aware of this series. I also am very particular about illustrations. This gives me a bone to chew on

You know how when you don't pay attention or see something the first time, but you do a search on something else and this thread comes up....and you realize this is really cool...and you may in fact have some of these books because they look familiar...but you didn't really pay much attention to them either because like Jenn said the covers aren't really inviting....?
So, I don't know how I missed this way back (except by the date it was in the week before our trip home the last Christmas before my dad died). But I was searching one of the author's names tonight and found this thread. When I looked at the link, I thought, "Hey I have some of those books." My mom had given them to me some years ago though I don't know where she got them as they weren't around when I was little. They got put on a rarely perused bookshelf so didn't pay much attention to them after that. Now, I am thinking, "These are really cool and vintage, with wonderful authors and illustrators." Love it. So I have 5 books and will be keeping my eyes open. My kids are too old to appreciate at this point - hopefully for the future grandkids, as I know my daughter especially loves vintage books...

A huge reminder that you we can't judge a book by its cover... !
