I'm wanting to make of list of dependable picture/chapter book authors. Those that you can depend on for quality, beauty, inspirational stories and not have to constantly read every word to weed out bad seeds. So far I have come up with:
Margaret Wise Brown
Eric Carle
Don Freeman
Tomie De Paola
I know there are others but I can't think of any off the top of my head. Do any of the above-mentioned have a questionable book I'm not aware of?

...and these are probably just the ones that pop to the forefront of my mind...there are so many more.
The authors you list are all classics in my mind. If you don't have Cay's book yet, you might consider A Picture Perfect Childhood. Lists upon lists of picture books organized by themes. It is an invaluable aid in making use of picture books!

Wow! Thank You. At first I was surprised that I didnt add Beatrix Potter and A.A. Milne to my list, but then I remembered that we have both the books and audio for both those authors and have no need to check them out at the library. I'm very familiar with half of the authors on your list and absolutely unfamiliar with the other half, so I'm sure I'm in for a real treat the next time I head to the library.
Do you think Leo Leoni books are worthy of the list?
Thanks for the recommendation. I'll look into Ms. Gibson's book.

I'm writing all these down. If there's anymore as they come to your mind, please post them. I'm sure you can relate to those library trips when you have to make your choices more quickly because of a fussy baby and then there are those days when you have help from your husband and you're able to peruse the library shelves and dig deeper. This list I'm jotting down will be for the former days.

This is a great topic because there are often fantastic books out there by authors who may have questionable other ones.
I'd add:
William Steig
Leo Lionni
Barbara Cooney
Bill Peet
Jim Aylesworth
Peter Spier
Margaret Hodges (at least all the ones I've seen so far...)
adaptations by Paul Galdone
stories (usually retold) by Eric Kimmel (we love his Anansi books the best)
and Elisa Kleven is one of our very favorite author/illustrators. I'd recommend any books by her, though I vaguely remember seeing something about divorce or something questionable by her once at the library? I could be mistaken; I just checked on Amazon.com through all the titles under her name and couldn't find it... she may have just illustrated the book?
