your teeny tiny library does not carry any of the books that you are interested in and ILL takes at least 3 weeks to get a book(I usually like to read a book before I buy) IF you can get it(they can not get any books that are new within the last year and they are bad about not letting you know that they can or can not get it  ).I have ended up buying a lot of books(currently in my basket as I try to decide what to do is M is for Masterpiece and M is for Melody) and I admit I am a book junkie  Just wondering what you do(or would do in my situation)

Katie,
I'm in the same boat. I went through the Serendipity booklist and found only a few titles in my library. I had to fill up my Amazon cart and decide what I can or can't buy. I want them all, but I need some budget approval first. Dh keeps asking why are my Kindergarten supplies so costly?

Glad to know I am not alone....I need to add some Catholic mosaic too my shelves as well....I may just need to have a Christmas list for the grandparents with book titles

My library is the same way. I picked the books that are used more than once and bought them. I also print out a list and take it to the used book stores. I've found a few that way.

Used books are my savior. I actually found a Beginner's Bible yesterday for cheap, and it was just wonderful to take that out of my Amazon cart!
I look online and in local used book stores for some of the titles. Catholic Mosaic I have added ever so slowly, and I admit, many of the titles are used.
I remember how a discussion here discussed how it helps the publishers to keep a book in print when people buy it new. I was feeling guilty about that aspect, but then realized I'm not conserving paper and "recycling". I'm in with the green!

Yes, I have been looking online for used(but on some with the additional shipping it costs the same as new with free shipping ). We have one used bookstore about an hour away but it is more for adults then kids....so I am stuck with online sources

I can so empathize, Katie! Our library is awful! I get so frustrated that I confess I generally tend to go through book lists a couple of times adding books to my cart, weeding through, looking at curriculum and reviews, weeding more and then purchasing as much as I can used.
I did this with Catholic Mosaic. I bought Cay's book long before I knew I'd need it. I looked at her lists and shopped as I read. Fortunately her book affords me a really good glimpse at the content of the book itself. Some books were sure things, others were iffy. I could make sure I wasn't buying 6 books for September and only 1 or none at all for February. I think I made more considered purchases that way. I'm really glad I did by the way, because all the books I bought for Catholic Mosaic are real gems! Keepers my kids say!
You could do something similar at Serendipity, printing the blog page and using it as a sort of checklist for yourself to ensure you purchase a few books from each of the categories that really appeal to you. You can possibly cross check your library at the same time, making sure not to order a book your library may actually carry. I do this, too. Then, keep your checklist with your plans for the year so you can remember which books you're going to read for the units (and which you'll need to check out of the library.)
Used book stores are your friend as well as a really good list to bring with you so you don't duplicate purchases and have a good idea of the books you're looking for.
I do try to be careful at Amazon Marketplace. They can offer several of the books I'm looking for at a very good price, but they charge to ship every single book, and it adds up awfully and depressingly fast. I wish I could find a good used book source online with reasonable shipping.
I love the reviews on Amazon - I may not buy from them, but they're invariably my first stop to read reviews. Very helpful when you can't pre-read a book first from a library pit stop.
I really, really wish our library were better - maybe because we're here in the deep south - but there is nothing even remotely Catholic here. And educational philosophy - forget it.

Yes, it is awful how there is nothing Catholic! I did find a good many of the books(from Catholic Mosaic) at libraries that are over an hour away(in opposite directions  ) and my local one does carry about 3 of them. I am going Friday to see if they really have them(they do according to worldcat.org). I need to post a separate question on the top book for each month from Catholic Mosaic so I can at least have a hint of where to start(I don't have the manual yet...its on my Christmas wish list ) I may request some of the others that I *think* I want to use(they are on Serendipity but I want to look at them for myself) before I buy but its so hard when I want to start now!!

I wonder- could we start a thread that listed used book sites that have good shipping deals?
Right now Fat City Books has free shipping for orders over $29.85
Wonderbook is another good site- right now it has $3.99 shipping flat rate (pay $3.99 for the first book and all others ship free).
That helps ease the shipping sting.
