Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

From the inside cover:
James Rumford, himself a world traveler, has retold Ibn Battuta's story in words and pictures, adding the element of ancient Arab maps--maps as colorful and evocative as a Persian miniature, as intricate and mysterious as a tiled Moroccan wall. Into this arabesque of pictures and maps is woven the story not just of a traveler in a world long gone but of a man on his journey through life.

This is a gorgeous book. I had a ton of trouble with the keywords, detailing 75,000 miles over 29 years is difficult! James Rumsford accomplishes this formidible task with a bright white narrow road flowing across the illustrations, weaving the tale tightly together. There is a nice glossary in the back of the book including important names and places, and translations of the Arabic and Chinese writings. This is a wonderful book for lovers of cartography and poetry.

"Traveling-it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller." ~Ibn Battuta

British TV (BBC?) did a great mini series based on Ibn Battuta's travels. It's worth looking for.
