Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Has anyone read this? IS it worth the $12. I was thinking of getting it in preparation for the Holy Father's visit.

Thanks.

Joseph and Chico

It was discussed here a few weeks ago - so far only orckdork has read it, but gives it a glowing recommendation. I'm hoping to get it soon.

I have it and am going to read it this afternoon to the kids. I'll post a review later!

We started it yesterday but life intervened and we plan on finishing it this afternoon. We like it so far...I'll try to share more later, too.

Okay, so we finally got around to reading this yesterday, and, well, I hate to say this - but we found it quite dull.      The illustrations are endearing but the story was long with little excitement. Now, keep in mind that I have 6 boys, and the first sentence that my then 6 year old ever wrote was, "Get Rid Cat." So, maybet that has something to do with it.

Well, I tried a lot of times to finish this book with the littles but they kept begging for a reading break and we only got half way through. I finished it by myself this afternoon and I have to say that I was disappointed, too, Lisa.

The illustrations are very engaging but the dialogue is stilted (could be the translation), it is a bit slow in parts and well, I didn't feel like I got to know the Holy Father very well at all. There was no real attempt to engage the reader and I felt that the story kept him (the Holy Father) at a distance--this might be the fault of the way it is narrated by the cat in flashback--but even the parts where he is a young boy were dullish and told in a lack-luster sort of way...

Bummer.

I have not read it, yet. Our library system doesn't have it.
Sooooo, I put in my first ever purchase request with our library.

We used it for a two-family religion class this past Friday. All of the children (and this adult) found it to be a bit long and dull. The pictures were lovely though.

My mil lent this book to us a couple of weeks ago in preparation for BXVI's visit.

Since it was so long, we broke it up over several mornings. It wasn't the most exciting book we've read... but it's the only children's book on BXVI that we've read, so the kids learned a lot more than we knew before!

I agree that the translation might be the problem. Some of the cat stuff didn't flow naturally... so I just didn't read that part.

We haven't read Joseph and Chico but we did check a book out from the parish library called Joseph from Germany. My son is six and I'm reading him just 2-4 pages or so per day. He seems to follow it pretty well, and the writing style seems fine to me.

That's the book we bought. I preferred it to the cat book. My son really, really liked it. He has all the chapter titles memorized and has requested to read it many times.

I mentioned it here last week.

Oh, I just deleted my original post I guess right as Jenn was replying -- I wanted to edit it but didn't have the time to get it right.

Theresa, I was going to discuss your other point that you deleted, but I guess you didn't want to debate that.

I elaborated a bit more with my son on some things, like I used the term Nazi army, since I want him to distinguish the difference between Germans and Nazi soldiers. Germans aren't bad, just what the Nazi regime did. But that was in context with other discussions and things we've read where he's heard the term Nazis.

One thing that was brought up in the book that towards the end of the war ALL of the schools closed. I didn't realize that before.
