Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We got this from the library; I couldn't pinpoint why it wasn't satisfying to me after we read it. The artwork is gorgeous... the story is nice. But after reading the description on Amazon.com, it makes sense now.

The way the author portrayed the wolf as a pitiable creature took the miraculous out of the legend and made this quite a secular application of logic on St. Francis' part.

Has anyone read it? Can anyone recommend a book with a richer, more Godly, version of this legend?

Are you speaking of Brother Wolf of Gubbio by Colony Elliott Santangelo?

I really liked the book. It appealed to both my young son and me. I thought the miraculous aspect was there, particularly the pages "Francis raised his arms and the wolf felt a great joy fill him until there was no room left for hunger or fear." The picture reminds me of Moses in the desert raising his staff. St. Francis' peace and holiness is powerfully portrayed. But I can understand your objection, as God isn't specifically mentioned.

I haven't seen this one, but am eager, because I love Ilse Plume's illustrations: Saint Francis & the Wolf by Jane Langton, illustrated by Ilse Plume. If anyone has seen it, please give a review!

This thread had some discussion of St. Francis picture books. MaryM recommended Saint Francis and the Wolf

I had reviewed some St. Francis picture books last year, and there was another "Wolf of Gubbio" that we enjoyed. I found it in my library, as it's OOP.

The kids are the ones who really enjoyed it. The drawings are cartoonish and it is very "big, bad wolfish" (which is probably why they like it) so it might not be everyone's cup of tea. It does emphasize the miraculous nature though of the event and does speak of Francis as a man of God. And the wolf is definitely not a pitiable creature - he is fearsome.

Thanks so much everyone for the links on St. Francis books! Jenn your blog post is fantastic!

I am planning to do a year with St. Francis with my boys (5 and 7)- looking at one picture book a month and having some kind of display or project - I already had some picked out but these suggestions will help fill in the gaps!

Some projects that I will do include -

a moving picture for St. Francis and the Wolf

a creche with St. Francis at Christmas time

A mobile of St. Francis and the birds

A tissue paper stained glass window

hmmm...I'm sure I can find a way to fit cookies in there somewhere!

and more...

I was going to start next month with his feast day.

I'm so excited!
