Hi, I am looking for picture books about California. Anyone have any favorites? actually.......ANY books!
I was inspired to decide to spend the summer reading about CA history......(and James Herriot, too!)........esp. since we will be taking another month long trip next fall through CA.
We get to visit with Willa, Robynn and Erica (hi, Erica!) among other CCM friends. In fact, anyone living from Sacramento to San Diego interested in meeting up.........we MAY be able to do so!
Thanks,

We have a humorous one called Nine for California by Sonia Levitin. Here is a description:
A mother and five children travel from the east coast to California in an overland stagecoach. Exciting incidents that happen during the trip are based on the letters and diaries of real travelers. Includes a map of the family's route on the endpapers and the ''anatomy of a stagecoach'' on the lower cover.

Hi Chari! Can you believe I am just checking in after two weeks on the road and one week of VBS! I've been meaning to write a huge 'thank you' and accounts of our visit to your beautiful home - which I will, maybe over in the fireside section.
This is all I came up with, some are chapter books - there must be more!!
Gold Rush
By The Great Horn Spoon!
Treasure in the Stream: The Story of the California Gold Rush
Seeds of Hope: The Gold Rush Diaries of Susanna Fairchild
Treasure in the Stream
The Journal of Wong Ming-Chung: A Chinese Miner (does anyone have experience with this author, Yep?)
Striking It Rich
San Francisco
Journey Around San Francisco From A to Z (beautiful picture book!! the rainbow flag was, unfortunately, on the inside covers, but not on the F or R pages)
Maybelle, The Cable Car
Earthquake in the Morning (in the Treehouse series)
San Francisco: Off the Beaten Path (for you to read, just avoid the section on the Castro, which is next to the Mission section in the book and in the city!)
Yosemite
John Muir and Squirrel (very nice pictures and history)
Two bear cubs; a Miwok Legend from Yosemite
Redwoods these weren't as good as the others
Redwoods Are the Tallest Trees in the World
Monarchs of the Forest
There Stand the Giants
Of course, we would love to meet up with you in San Diego! You can stay with us, and if that doesn't work, we definitely would love to have you over for dinner or whatever! More on that later......

Since an alphabet book was mentioned, another series we like is the Discover America State by State series from Sleeping Bear Press. I haven't seen the California one, G is for Golden but we enjoy the Colorado one. They also have teachers guides on pdf online. Teacher's guide

Sunsets of the West is a westward expansion/California Trail book. The family goes through the Sierras and settles in California. I really like the illustrations and as a 'westerner" appreciate the beautiful "sunsets of the west" page at the end of the book.
