Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I've just been doing some book browsing and I found some lovely looking books. Each link here has a lovely description of the book but I was looking for some personal thoughts from anybody, if you have any!

Who Laid the Cornerston of the World? by Ann Pilling
I like the look of the front cover, I believe it is based on poetry in the book of Job?

The Three Questions - Based on a Story by Leo Tolstoy by Jon Muth
I love anything written by Tolstoy but wondering if anyone has it and has anything to share?

Patrick: Saint of Ireland by Joyce Denham
Another St Patrick book I've never seen before, does any one have this book?

The Donkey and the Golden Light by Gill Speirs
I saw this at Potico Bookshop last year and the illustrations had me entranced but I remember having a vague feeling there was something in it I didn't like, does anyone have this book and what do they think of it?

No, NONE of them!   But I have glanced at The Three Questions at Borders. I can't remember: is it the one based on Dao Teaching? Muth has one book that incorporates quite a bit of Eastern philosophy, if I remember correctly.

Sorry I can't be of more help---egads.

But I am intrigued to see them now, you can be sure! Watching the thread....

I've read The Donkey and the Golden Light and think it is a good book and it is beautifully illustrated (done in the style of the medieval masters). It was discussed here briefly before Easter because it is a great book for connecting Christmas to Easter. Jenn had a comment after reading it that Jesus would have ridden a young donkey (a colt) not an older donkey as depicted in this story. (But to fit this story it has to be an old donkey.) She commented as to whether that was a minor issue. For me it was - I didn't even really think about it (shows how well I know about that scriptural detail as I didn't catch it )

Nina, thanks so much for that info, I went back and re-read their write-up and it did say it has changed Tolstoy's story somewhat. We have a new Borders store close by, I'll definately see that book in the flesh next time I'm in there - I would think it a shame that someone would bring in a whole new 'religious philosophy' different than that of the writer's original beliefs or message. If I were a writer and someone did that to me, that would have me turning over in my grave!

That's it Mary!! That was the point I had been mulling over! It is something that could be explained to the children and I would do that, as scripture has felt the need to point out it was an unridden colt. But I think that I could view this book the way I view St Francis and the Christmas Donkey, we can see the fable in it but it is still a beautiful, religious story for the children.

It's all coming back...we were visiting Sydney on holidays last year, we went to Portico to spend a small amount on books and I saw that book immediately and fell in love with it, when I was trying then to make the decision which books to buy ('cause I'd fallen in love with a few of them! ) - round two of my decision making was to then read them cover to cover and when I saw that, I thought it could wait until another time.

Thanks for the memory jog Mary! It's back on my wish list and I'm off to read the link now!

I've just checked out the link Mary and I clicked on "The King and the Colt" that Jenn had talked about and I saw a recommended book from that page for a book called Sing Alleluia! by Daphna Flegal

So I was wondering if anyone has heard of this book? Just wondering if it discusses the 'alleluia' or is it another Easter story?
