Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hello ladies,
Have any of you used any of Mark Twain's works, especially for boys? If so at what age do you allow them to be read? They are so good at describing the times, but some rough things happen and the language is also rough at times. I have an almost 11 yo and am wondering. I'd appreciate any input either way. Thank you all and may God bless you abundantly.

My two boys aged 9 1/2 and almost 12 have read "Tom Sawyer" and are in the middle of "The Adeventures of Huckleberry Finn" It took a little longer for my 9 1/2 year old to get through "Tom Sawyer" but he is flying through "Huck Finn" They really have enjoyed them.

We also did some studying of Mark Twain and they made a scrapbook. Mark Twain invented the first self adhesive scrapbook. They had a blast with that. I also found a book at the library called "Mark Twain for kids: His Life and Times". Here is a link to amazon.com that tells about the book. sorry I do not know how to put in direct links http://www.amazon.com/Mark-Twain-Kids-Times-Activities/dp/15 56525273/sr=8-1/qid=1171973371/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-5242592-4 316054?ie=UTF8&s=books.   The book helped us to learn a lot about Mark Twain and his prspective while writing his books. There are also activities to do that coincide with the books he wrote. We had a lot of fun with it.

I also have some links to his life and writings and such in my favorites. If you want them pm me and I can e-mail them to you or if someone else is more computer savy can help me I can post the links here.

My oldest son read Tom Sawyer at about age 11-1/2 I think. He actually wasn't interested in it at first, but I played a few chapters of the audiobook in the car on a trip somewhere, and when we got back he finished by reading the book. He hasn't read Huck Finn, but just this past week my dh picked up an old Huck Finn movie at Blockbuster for our family movie night. It's from the 60's I think, with Tony Randall as one of the shyster reverends, and other than the "n" word (which the book is famous for of course!) once, it was very appropriate and my 5 and 7 yos loved the movie. My oldest happened to be off on a camping trip but he probably would have liked it too. Made me want to re-read the book; it's been 30 yrs since I read it probably!

We are doing Tom Sawyer as a read aloud right now. I am reading it to my 15,13,11, and 7 year olds(and the 3 year old is hanging around too).

I debated whether this would be a good book to read aloud with all the mischief that the boys in this book get into. But we were also reading Minn of the Mississippi and I thought it would go along nicely with it.

Call it God's providence, but we happen to be reading St. Ignatius along with it. We are able to contrast and compare the two charaters and the children have concluded that they like the book, Tom Sawyer, but that he really is very unwise, selfish, and foolish at times.

We listened to Tom Sawyer on audio tape when the kids were in late elementary grades--I think the older two were 10 and 11 or so.

We really enjoyed it, but we were listeing once as I was getting gas, and the "n" word blasted out of my speakers in the car, and I almost died.
