My 5 yo twin sons are just beginning to sit for a longer period of time for a GOOD story Any suggestions for chapter books with a winter theme? I think we'll try Mr. Popper's Penguins since we already own it but thought that I'd check with you ladies for other suggestions. Thanks so much!
Blessings,
Kelly

What about The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe or
Farmer Boy (or other Little House books)?

Little House in the Big Woods....lots of winter in that one!
Not a winter theme, but a good, exciting book to start the 5-year-olds.....James and the Giant Peach.

Not neccesarily winter theme, but winter plays a role:
Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
Pinnochio (but only the version translated by Carol della Chiesa and illustrated by Atilio Musino, other versions are not worth it)
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Great suggestions, thank you! I forgot that James and the Giant Peach was the first chapter book that my husband read to my oldest sons ( now turning 25 and 23!)
We read the beautiful picture books of the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe before Christmas and they loved it but it had those gorgeous illustrations too.
I love Farmer Boy but I'm thinking that it might not have enough adventure in it for them.
Thank again, ladies!
Blessings,
Kelly

5 was about the age my ds was when we first read Farmer Boy, and he was completely entranced with Almanzo! I think he seems like a "regular" boy, and that was part of his appeal.

I think I'll give Farmer Boy a try since we have that sitting on our shelves. I may just have a "theme" going here. We have the PA Farm Show next week, so I may start with Charlotte's Web (I ususally stay away from anything "commercialized" by a movie but Charlotte was a classic long before the movie)and then after the Farm Show try Farmer Boy.

My ds, about to turn 7 and not reading on his own yet, has loved several of the Little House books even more than Farmer Boy (I think we started them when he was 5-1/2). He also liked Charlotte's Web (before the movie) and Trumpet of the Swan. We've been reading through Narnia over the last 6 mos or so, with breaks - we're now in The Silver Chair.
