Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi

I have two boys hopelessly hooked on Redwall. They refuse to look at LOTR until they finish the whole series. This may take a while.

I would like to steer them back toward some other great books. Maybe even sneak in something that is not fantasy. In the past we have enjoyed all sorts of things, but nowadays we have this one-track Redwall thing going.

Can anyone recommend some good reads? These guys like great characters... not neccesarily 'boy' books... but that is ok, too.

thanks!
(oh, this is for my 11yo, too.. but about Redwall level is where they are...)

Well, mine love the Swallows and Amazons series, The Hobbit and The Chronicles of Narnia. They've enjoyed all of the Edward Eager books (Half Magic, Magic by the Lake, etc) and some of Nesbits books (The Complete Book of Dragons, Five Children and It, Railway Children, a few others), Peter Pan, Treasure Island, Robin Hood, Rolf and the Viking Bow. They love the Lloyd Alexander series about Prydain (Book of Three, Black Cauldron, Castle of Lyr,...). We listened to the first three on tape and Nicholas (11) just bought the first two to reread. They are very exciting and have great characters. We can't wait until the rest come out on audio. (We're now hooked on the narrator.) We've read aloud (in order to choose the stories, as some are age inappropriate IMO) the Sherlock Holmes stories. Hope this helps!

My dd has read the Redwall series over and over and over, so many times she has actually lost count...so I sympathize with you! That being said, the books that lured her (temporairily) from Redwall were the Edward Eager books and E. Nesbitt books that Janette mentioned above.

Also, Macbeth mentioned elsewhere that they have really liked the Cornelia Funke books such as "Inkheart". Although I haven't read them (yet),these books strike me as being written in a similar vein.

Gonna go break out "Swallows and Amazons" now to see if I can tempt dd with those suggestions!

We are listening to Summerland by Michael Chabon on CD as we drive around in the car. Summerland It is very long. Twelve CDs and we are only about half way through, but my oldest son really enjoys it. The author does a good job reading the book and I haven't come across any offensive language or situations that made me have to fast forward it or pray that he wasn't understanding iykwim. One of the main characters is a girl -- Jennifer Rideout. The book oddly enough centers around baseball, but there are giants, fairies, even a sasquatch (sp?), and plenty of other mythical creatures.

Just thought I'd make a plug for the book since I didn't see anyone else had read it.
