We just read Stuart Little out loud together. It had some cute/humorous parts but overall it seemed so all over the place. We finished it tonight and we all sat there with this expression of "that's it?" What are we missing?!
(It probably seems pathetic that this is the first time I've ever read it but hey! I grew up on the Scholastic book club of the 70's/80's and we read things about Shawn Cassidy or whatever!)

Julie, I feel the same way about Stuart Little. I think it's a far inferior book to "Charlotte's Web."
When my kids listened to SL on tape from the library, they thought the last tape was gone !
Really, I'm surprised that SL was White's first children's book, and that people were clamoring for more after that. I would not have been

We didn't like it either. We read it when the bigs were younger, I don't think we'll be repeating it with the littles as a read aloud together. If they choose to read it on their own, then fine.

Thanks for the heads up. I had this on our reading list for January. I also grew up in the 70's and never read any of the books I want my children to read. We read Charlotte's Web (excellent) and are now reading Trumpet of the Swan (also very good), but I think I will remove SL from the list. There are plenty of other great books we can focus on.
Thanks!
Paula

We didn't think much of how it ended, esp. dh who was reading it aloud to the kids. Almost seemed like the author was tired of the book and just stopped writing...a big letdown after CW.

My ds7 said after the last page, "That was it?! That was HORRIBLE!". My husband and I were basically in agreement.
I was wondering if anyone else was disappointed with that book. It could have been lots better.

What I recall was that it was not a healthy representation of family relationships. Somehow something just seemed out of place there. It has been a long, long time since we read it - to my now 19 yo dd when she was younger and we've never bothered to read it with any of the other 5 so I don't even remember why it felt that way to us and I don't know that I ever completely pegged it - just a gut feeling. We, also, got the book because we loved Charlotte's Web.
