Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm going to be facillitating a once a month book club for a small group of 11 year old girls.
They are fairly avid readers and have read most of the "standards"... Secret Garden and the rest, Little House Series, etc.

I'm looking for titles with interesting, virtuous female characters who would inspire lively discussions. I want to stay away from overty romantic themes, pure as they might be, as these young ladies are happily yet uninterested in romance. My purpose for the group is to build mentoring relationships with these girls, and encourage them towards Godliness.

Thanks you for your input!

Have they read The Railway Children? Strong females, plenty of discussions about right and wrong, and even some pre-revolutionary Russian political nuance .

Five Little Peppers and How They Grewis a another suggestion. Not just girls but a family, children who behave in a loving and    respectful manner towards each other and thier mother.

All-of-A-Kind Family by Sydney Taylor. I think there is 5 books in the series. My oldest dd and I read these years ago and now I am going to have my 12 dd read them. They are about 5 girls growing up in a Jewish family in the early 1900's.

Shawna,

We also belong to a monthly book club - girls between 8 and 12. This is our third year in the group and while not all of our books have feminine main characters, all are excellent reads. We have found that some of the more untraditional books (boy) have been the most thought provoking. All have strong positive themes tied to virtues. Here are a few of our titles that come to mind - in no particular order:

This year:
Treasure Island
A Single Shard
Tuck Everlasting
Various bios of Helen Keller
Little Britches
Past years:
The Mixed up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler
Rabbit Hill
Redwall
Door in the Wall
Where the Red Ferns Grow
The Incredible Journey
The Wheel on the School
The Enormous Egg
A study of Fairy tales using Cinderella
Understood Betsy

And don't forget that Newbery list (though it lists audio books, it also has links to the print copies).

I would recommend Madeline Takes Command - it's in the living history section of Bethlehem Books. Actually most of those living history books in Bethlehem Books would be appropriate.
