Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We're officially kicking off the year tomorrow with Cay's great idea of schultuete. Since we are studying various countries this year, I thought about starting off with Germany. However, I've looked over the FIAR titles as well as the great resources at homeschool share and can't find many books (picture books) to include. I did find some kids' books about Bach and Beethoven on a travel website. I suppose I could build my study around those. Anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks in advance!

We are going to be studying Germany this year, as we move to the Middle Ages and Europe.

I don't have any specific suggestions, as far as book titles, but here are some things we will be looking at:
Grimms Fairy Tales (I have an old Grimm FT book, from the 1920's. Very gruesome, really, so with my youngers, I will be using the "Disneyized" version of some of them!)
In addition to Bach and Beethoven, we will listen to Wagner, Mendelssohn, Shumann, and Grieg.
Johannes Kepler (astronomer)
Castles (lots of places on internet with really neat pictures- the Liechtenstein Castle is "very cool" according to my 8yo ds.)
Albert Einstein
The Passion Play in Oberammergau (held every 10 years, by the residents of Oberammergau.)
Oktoberfest (big carnival starting in Sept., runs 2? weeks, started with King Ludwig's marriage to ?Therese?-we will skip the beer, but can have the pretzels!)
Christmas in Germany books
and more study of Heidelberg (my grandmother's hometown)

I use the assorted country books from the library, not reading all of the info to the boys, but areas that are interesting to me and them. We also usually check out the CIA website, for info on each country. There is some neat info to be found there. Here is the site for
Germany

I hope this is somewhat helpful. We find most of the materials at the library.

God Bless,
Stacy in MI

Berlioz the Bear by Jan Brett is a picture book that sprang to mind, I'll keep thinking...

Editing to add another suggestion here, since I managed to double post this morning

Haven't read this book yet, have it requested at my library, it looks very interesting. The Journey That Saved Curious George: The True Wartime Escape of Margret and H.A. Rey details their German upbringing pre-World Wars with photos interspersed with artwork and mementos. They were Jewish Germans who bicycled out of Paris on bikes Hans built from scraps with the manuscript of Curious George in one of the bike baskets. There should be lots of great German things in the beginning of this book as both Hans and Margret were born in Hamburg.
