Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was wondering whether anyone would recommend their Little Jewel and/or Miller series. I like the morale behind the stories but couldn't preview them to know whether they are well-written or not. Thanks!

We have some of the little Jewel books. We bought them years ago, before we were Catholic. They are on quality paper, despite being softback. I bought them when my first was 3 and they are still in great shape despite being on the low shelf where they can be accessed even by my toddlers who are most likely to chew on books!

They usually show mom as looking Amish/Mennonite and the children dressed accordingly, too. The text is sweet but I wouldn't necessarily call it living literature...I guess its in that grey area like the Treasure Box books, where kids like them but they don't seem to fit the traditional definition for a good book. I think they are most appropriate for the preschool age. By the time my children are 5 they are bored with them.

hope this helps!

Books,

Thanks for replying. One more question: Did the books inspire the kids like the Treasure Box books? I'm trying to inspire my kids to be cheerful and to help around the house.

I think it would depend on your kids. I read them to my oldest when he was 3. I don't think it influenced him at all, but he's not easily influenced, either.

As I remember, they are awfully cheap. You could maybe order a couple and see how it goes?

We have one where the boys in the family get ready for church and the youngest buttons his shirt wrong and gets help eventually. And another one where the daughter says something like, "Daddy says Mommy is not so tired now that I help around the house more often" and she is seen helping an older sister weed the garden. Then they go have cookies at Grandma's house. We also have one about nature called God's Wonderful Trees. They are very culturally Mennonite/Amish. The pictures of the houses and the gardens, chores, clothes etc all look like what would be normal for these children (we live near Amish country so I can attest to that).

Does this help at all?
