While on vacation, I read Surviving the Applewhites.
Has anyone else read it?

I read it a year or 2 ago and from what I remember , I really enjoyed it. I'm quite sure it was recommended here (or maybe on the Yahoo CCM list).
Maybe it was Leonie whose recommendation I took. I just did a quick search and she did it as a read-aloud in late 2004.
Did you like it?

Yes, Kelly liked it so much that she bought a second copy! My kids liked it, too.

We just finished Surviving the Applewhites as a family read aloud the other day. All of us loved it!!! Even my newly-turned 5 yo listened in some nights because of the Sound of Music connection due to her love for that movie.
We are by no means an unschooling family. But it was very interesting to see the reaction of some of the girls as we read. My most creative child kept saying how she would love to try this type of learning. I finally said that maybe we could try it some week as an experiment.
Well Christmas break came and went, and I still hadn't gotten to quite a few tasks on my "to do" list, so I had them use the first days of January as an unschool week. It wasn't radical unschooling because I set up parameters. I told them that they had to do their normal math lesson and had to write something and read something of their choice every day. Other than that they could pursue their own interests.
They loved it! Paints and easels that hadn't seen the light of day for ages were pulled out and used each day. My musical oldest dd spent lots and lots of time at the piano. Two of the girls had received scrapbooks for Christmas and they spent time putting together their first few pages. And writing became power point presentations on dog breeds and which ones would be best for our family. (That from wishful animal lovers!)
I'm thinking we may do this every so often, even if only for a day here or there.
Anyway, I had to make another plug for Surviving the Applewhites. It has become one of our favorites!

Hmmmmm, I must be missing something ... I read it and couldn't stand it and wouldn't do it as a read-aloud for my littles ... I thought it painted hs'ers as completely odd and out-there ...
Sorry, just my $.02

nothing to be sorry for
some hs-ers ARE completely odd and out-there and don't care about it.
we own it and like it so-so. not an all time favorite by any means, but I like that it portrays them as real families, not perfect, and as some kind of homeschoolers not just people who school at home, kwim?

I LOVED the book. We read it aloud last year? Year before? It gave me an excuse to introduce my children to my all time favorite film, The Sound of Music. They were very intrigued by the community theater part of the story.
My son (Mr. Black and White...no grey areas for him!) did comment several dozen times that 1) E.D. was the only one with sense and 2)the music from the film stuck in his head too much.
Everyone loved the antics of the youngest brother, too!
