Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

DH reads to the kids at bedtime and likes to do series. He's mostly reading to the boys (ages 12 and 8) because the girls sometimes fall asleep during reading time. Last year he read the Lemony Snickets series, and the year before he did the Wizard of Oz series. I'm looking for recommendations for this year.

Of course, I'd love for him to read Little House or Anne of Green Gables, but this is boy bonding time, so none of them are interested in those books.

I was thinking the Narnia series, but my oldest has read those all two times through. Any other ideas?

Ralph Moody's Little Britches series is THE BEST Father/Son read aloud. Really.

We have also been enjoying The Melendy Quartet, the boys and I, that is.

Swallows and Amazons is fun and a good summer read. We have done the audio book, though, because I stumble so much ober all the technical sailing language.

Though not a chronological series, the Freddy the Pig books by Walter Brooks have been greatly enjoyed by my boys! Also the Lad the Dog books by Albert Terhune are great.

Oh, Little Britches, I hadn't even thought of that. I just checked with a friend of mine and she has the whole series, so I think we're going to go with that.

Thanks for the suggestion, Lindsay!

The Great Brain series might be appealing...bear with the first book, in which Tom (the Great Brain brother) is a master swindler. His character undergoes an enormous transformation as the series unfolds. The series centers around a Catholic family in late 1800s Utah.

Another fun series that most boys like is the Alvin Fernald series. I'm pretty sure the books have been reprinted recently.
