I'd like to buy a copy of the Burgess Bird Book to read along with the kiddos as we do the Great Backyard Bird Count, but I'm a little confused. On Amazon, several of the editions listed have reviews that complain of bad (or nonexistent) illustrations. I'd really like one with illustrations! Can anyone let me know which edition would be a good choice?

I have the Yesterday's Classics paperback version. There are black/white images in this version.
I also have the Yesterday's Classics ebook package which includes the Burgess Bird Book and all the images in color. (You can read this version free here at the Baldwin Project).
I use these full color original images to go along with the book: Montessori Cards for the Burgess Bird book. There are 9 sets total. I printed on photo paper so the images would be crisp and then laminated. They've lasted several years (three different children have used them now). They're a good way to learn the birds in the book.
Satori Smiles has a really great companion guide for the Burgess Bird book. She covers every chapter and bird and makes coordinating resources and information so easy! You'll definitely want to bookmark this to return to as you read through the book.
If you really want a copy of the Burgess Bird book with color illustrations, you'll have to hunt down an old original copy.
Since you mentioned following along with the Great Backyard Bird Count, I thought I'd add a resource that we use to keep up with the birds we see in our backyard:

Completely without provocation, my boys came running up to me as I was fixing breakfast to tell me that they saw a bright red bird (cardinal) at the neighbor's bird feeder. I haven't even talked about how we're going to start learning about birds to them. They're just naturally so interested! What a fun opportunity to step away from what I was doing and pull up the bird identification app I have. We read about it, looked at pictures, listened to what that bird's call sounded like. I can't wait to start the bird count next month. They're going to love it!

Jen, I wonder, have you been to the site recently that you linked for the card sets? It's a paid website now, which is fine, but I can't seem to get to the checkout page. I'm wondering if the website is still up and running?

We are doing the Burgess Bird Book as our Feb read aloud (for the 5th time!!) - to go along with our Backyard Bird Count. We love the Sartori Smiles resources - and we also use my little guy's Identiflyer for the bird calls. I have always used the free coloring book from Cornell Lab, but I am thinking of getting the Notebooking Pages North American Birds as they have some really lovely pages for all ages.

Oh, we love the North American Birds Notebooking Pages!  They'd be excellent with a study like this, Marilyn! Great reminder to print more! Like you, I'm on my 3rd and 4th round of some of these treasured trips through learning about birds! It's delightful to come back around to these old friends!
