Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hello all,
I was wondering if anyone has used the My Book House set for reading practice? I am trying to decide if a purchase of that set would be a better bang for my buck to supplement our guided reading after we finish our formal phonics program(I will have one in a few weeks and then 3 more after him to use it). I don't currently have a copy of the set(nor any access to it to preview) so I am not sure if what I am trying to do would be feasible. I have been pricing chapter books and at $3-5 per book they add up quickly through the years! Anyone have any thoughts on the matter?

I have the set, and it's so lovely, but I consider it as supplementary/enjoyable reading for my sons or some read aloud for the earlier volumes (Nursery Rhymes).

I'll look it over again (it's upstairs), but I don't remember it being "graded" reading, although the volumes do get gradually more difficult in reading. It might not be exactly what you are looking for early reading. When you say phonics practice, does this mean you're talking about a new or beginning reader?

Chapter books do add up, but they are the complete store. My Book House, if I recall correctly, don't have a complete book, but excerpts or stories from books. I think it's to ignite and read more and deeper from real books.

So that's why I think it's a supplemental, not necessarily a stand-alone set.

Ah I guess I didn't realize they weren't the complete stories. It would be for a reader that is a good reader that has finished formal phonics lessons but still needs to read aloud to me(he tends to read too fast and add/take away words so I have him read aloud and slow down). It wouldn't necessarily for pleasure reading though maybe it is best for that and full chapter books would be better for him to read to me? There are way too many lovely books out there to decide what to do!

Well, I'm looking at the first four, and they would be more read-alouds than for beginning readers.

There are a variety of short chapter books for beginning readers. I'm thinking of Encyclopedia Brown, Meet _____ series and other Step Up books, and a little harder, Hank the Cowdog.

Also, there are various levels of I Can Read and Beginning Books including short chapter books. The Science and Mystery and History I Can Read are quite good.
