Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

For Canada Day on Sunday my family made a trip to a local pioneer village where they have a Dominion Day celebration that is "set" in 1868 (one year after Canada gained its independence through the British North American Act).

Anyway... while I perusing their gift shop I came across a whole section of books by Connie Brummel Crook. I had never heard of her, but I was instantly drawn to her books- historical fiction written about the post-Revolutionary War period, leading up to the War of 1812. She writes about Laura Secord, loyalist families who fled the US and came to Canada when the US gained independence, Native American stories set in the are we live in, etc.

I picked up:

Maple Moon
Laura Secord's Brave Walk
Mary's Way

I am super excited about them- my kids are American/Canadian and I am still trying to figure out how to teach them history from both perspectives. The American part comes naturally to me.

Anyway, just wanted to share my discovery of this amazing living history author living right in my neighborhood.
