Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Ds 8 is a tough nut to crack. I can't get him to read chapter books. He reads on level. He read nonstop for two days to earn the library summer reading program and the B&N one. But, he will only read picture book (which are on his readin level) or short, easy chapter books. I have tried to give him several chapter books to read and I really have to encourage him and usually he only reads the first chapter or two and gives up. I asked him and he likes the books. He will go to the library and pick out his own books and still won't read them.    My oldest hit a bump where he wouldn't read "thick" books and it took a lot of encouraging to convience him that he can read those big books. He flys through them now. I know Ds 8 interest in reading is not as big as big bro and that is ok, but I need him to be reading some good literature. I know I will have to offer a reward for finishing a book in a set amount of time, but does anyone have any other suggestions. I also have tried many types of books. I guess another question is what have been hits for your 8 year old boy?

You know.. he's 8. That's really very young. I would think that simply giving him more time will solve this issue without a great deal of angst on anyone's part.

I would focus more on finding GOOD short stories and picture books and the like for him. (what about Tin Tin?) and read the chapter books out loud.. he'll get there and a lot sooner than you think right at this moment.

I agree with Jodie- 8 years old and a boy!! That's pretty young for a lot of reading and boys in the summertime are more active.

Just keep taking him to the library and have him pick out his own books Eventually he'll hit on something that captures his interest.

Thanks Jodie and Elena! I guess my expectations are just too high. Just inexperience on my part and that is why I love this forum. Someone with older and more kids will be able to help guide me in my mothering/teaching.

Short chapter books are a nice start! I would probably try to make sure that what he's getting is good stuff, as you said. My Father's Dragon is a nice boy series as is Paddington Bear, and they have lots of illustrations to help them feel less daunting than a book that is mostly words. Mr. Popper's Penguins is a good, first chapter book, and my son also liked Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle.

I don't think I would offer a reward, though. Obviously, he WILL read for a reward, but I'm not convinced it will necessarily instill a love of reading that you desire. Since he's really reading, just not exactly what you'd prefer, I'd just make sure to have quality stuff around as an option and keep offering things that might appeal but would challenge him.

I agree with Lindsay. See if starting him on some series will motivate him?

My son still loves the old Step-Up Books by Random House. He is 8 1/2, reads all sorts of books, but loves returning to these. There is also another old series Dolch Tales from Other Lands, which I remember reading over and over again, and now my son does, too.

Clyde Robert Bulla has loads of short books that are inspiring for young boys. Also try finding Marguerite d'Angeli and Lois Lenski. They have series that are smaller chapter books that are meaty but easy to read.

My son also read a lot of Encyclopedia Brown and Hank the Cowdog (still reads the latter) while he was getting his feet wet. There is something intimidating about the fatter books. Once he really gets comfortable reading books that expand beyond chapter books, then he'll get there.
