Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

List your 13-15 year old kids (and yours!) favorite books that are MYSTERIES, HISTORICAL FICTION AND ADVENTURE (my dd 14 loves that kind of book so Little Women type thing is out).

Oh - and this isn't for school reading but pleasure, after school reading (she loves to read and is hard to keep her "in books").

Oh - and if they are on nook or ibooks all the better!

I remember being given "The Three Musketeers" at that age and wondering what the heck? But to my surprise, I got so into it, I couldn't put it down.
And afterwards, you can watch the movie together. That'd be fun!

ADVENTURE

Another vote for the Three Musketeers, for sure! That swashbuckling trio convinced my brother that reading could indeed be fun!

Mysteries:

Anything Agatha Christie (I devoured her mysteries in high school)
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
"The Gold Bug" and other Poe mysteries - he created the detective short story in its modern form

Historical Fiction:

The Betsy-Tacy high school books (starts with Heaven to Betsy) - set in early 1900s Minnesota - my #1 favorite historical fiction series

Calico Captive
Constance (Patricia Clapp)
Mara, Daughter of the Nile
Anne of Green Gables (the first part of the first book is tedious, but once you get to know Anne, it's all an adventure!)
Catherine, Called Birdy

Possibly/probably out of print, but read them if you can find them:

Judith of France and Journey for a Princess by Margaret Leighton (out of print and hard to find but wonderful!)

Campion Towers by John and Patricia Beatty (same!)

O the Red Rose Tree and any other books by Patricia Beatty you can find; some are in print and libraries might have other titles

Adventure:

My Side of the Mountain is about a boy but I loved that book as a young girl and many other girls I know feel the same way!

The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle - you want to pre-read this one. It's excellent and filled with symbolism and imagery that reinforce the plot, but Charlotte has to cope with many difficult and violent situations, so this is a book I recommend only if parents pre-read it.

Have you considered saints' biographies in the adventure category? Many of our beloved saints have led amazing lives. St. Maximilian Kolbe, St. Frances Cabrini, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, St. Katharine Drexel, Venerable Cornelia Connelly (foundress of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus; I went to SHJC schools from first through 12th grade), Blessed John Paul II, and many more of our saints and blesseds have lived amazing adventurous lives.

My ds loved the Ranger's Apprentice series. He read every one. The author has released a new series called The Brotherband Chronicles, also.

Dragons in our Midst is a series by Brian Davis that he also enjoyed. It's written by a Christian homeschooling Dad and has Christian undertones to it. I read the first one and had no objections to it.
