That book is written by Julie Andrews (yes the actress). My daughter really enjoyed it, when she read ot years ago. I had no issues with it then.

She also wrote Mandy, which my daughter, Mandy, throughly enjoyed.

My daughter loved this book and read it on her own at about 9 or 10 yrs of age. I then read it to her younger sisters and they loved it! It's a fun adventurous story.

It's been a few years since we read it, but I don't believe so. I'm sure it would appeal to boys as well. My 3 oldest just happen to be girls and their little brother was just a toddler when I read it to them. I think he will really enjoy it in a year or two.
