We are learning about South America and the kids are having fun, but I feel like we are missing a really great read aloud. I would love a fictional story that takes place there, a saint story or a historical novel that isn't violent! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. For some reason, this part of the world is really hard to find good books about!

It seems you are looking more for a chapter book read aloud, but there are more that I'm aware of in the picture book category.
Old thread - Picture books on/in S. America?

There is a great chapter book illustrated by Leo Politi ( a favorite of mine), Stories from the Americas by Frank Henius. It is a collection of short stories from Central and South American countries - one for each country. The book is oop but worth finding if you can get from library, etc.

The Secret of the Andres is an Ann Nolan Clark book, Newberry Award winner, 1953

Thanks for this reply! I found way too many books from the old thread and got The Secret of the Andes too! I am so excited to get them tomorrow from Amazon! BTW, I don't need to feel guilty about buying living nonconsumable books, do I?
