Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Anyone know if these books are "o.k." or not? I know they were written by a homeschooled boy, but I had listended to part of one book on tape a few years ago and it sounded a bit violent. Someone just gave my son the whole set. (He is 12) Should I be concerned about him reading these??

Thanks for any help in the matter.

Kim,

Yes. There is some pretty graphic violence and sociopathic behavior in those books according to my oldest dd (who is an adult and reviews books and other media as a hobby). As her standards are laxer than mine, this caution warrants serious concern. She says the first book is not that bad, but the second..... There are some specific concerns about the portrayal of religion as well.

I cannot vouch for the language or viewpoint of this site, but she says that it is a good site to learn about the deficiencies of Christopher Paolini's works. (My dd thinks I am being fussy.)

If my son were capable of reading Christopher Paolini's works, I wouldn't let him.

In Christ,
Deborah

There is an older thread with some reviews/opinion of Eragon, which might be helpful.

Kim

We have a set age in our family (14), but then we are stricter than some. Regardless of age I would agree with Deborah's cautions and feel if reading, discussions are warranted.

I'd suggest to read first yourself and discern if you feel your son is ready yet, or whether you wish him to read at all.

I preread these as they came out. I allowed my kids to read the first one. The second one has a rather long section that is very anti-Catholic, I clipped it and allowed my kids to read the book minus that section. The third book was so disgusting that I had to tell the children we were done.
