Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I will be driving with my mother and 2 dc ages 8 and 6 across Missouri and through Illinois to Chicago. I would love an audio book recommendation that somehow relates. Love the Little House books but need something else! My librarian recommended 4 I haven't heard of:

A Long Way from Chicago By Peck, Richard
Moon over Manifest By Vanderpool, Clare
Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis
Out of the Dust by Hesse, Karen

I read Moon Over Manifest and I don't think it would appeal to nor be appropriate for dc 6 and 8. I enjoyed it, but did not pass it on to my 11 year old. The editorial reviews at Amazon might give you some idea of the more mature themes.

Would "Sarah, Plain and Tall" work?

HTH,
Kristin

Kristin,That is exactly what I was afraid of! And I fear it may be the same with Long Way from Chicago.   And the others looked to depressing for this trip. Well I really appreciate your response! thx!!

My 9yo and I enjoyed Long Way from Chicago and the "sequel," Fair Weather. My 8yo wasn't as entertained by them, though. There were some things that went over their heads that I'd have to stop to explain. I don't know that a 6yo would find them engaging.

My kids all enjoyed Rascal, by Sterling North. It's set in Wisconsin, though.

They also enjoyed Caddie Woodlawn, but it's been too long for me to remember the details.

Our library doesn't have it on audio, but The Little Britches series by Ralph Moody is excellent. Warning- some "cowboy" language

Birchbark House by Louise Erdich. My 8 and 5yos REALLY enjoyed this. Kind of a Native American version of Little House. There is also a sequel, The Porcupine Year.
