Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone know the biography of St. Catherine of Siena written by Sigred Undset?

I was eyeing this CD for a present for my 15yr old.

St. Catherine

I have never seen the actual book before, but have read Undset's "Kristen Lavransdatter".

I have had that book in my Amazon wishlist for awhile. It has very good reviews on Amazon. And like you, I read Kristin Lavransdatter and loved it. I have read Lay Siege to Heaven by Louis DeWohl which is about St. Catherine and it was good.

I read this book about 4 years ago and was very impressed by it. So much so that I tried to buy it, but at that time no one had republished it (you'll see that the Ignatius Press first edition was released in 2009). I ended up getting an old hardcover version from someone in the UK through online used booksellers. Anyway, that's how much I liked it!

In addition to a masterful portrayal of the life of St. Catherine, Undset also weaves a detailed picture of Italian Medieval life.

Lisa, do you think it is appropriate for a 15 yr old? Kristen Lavransdattar had very mature and heavy emotional themes.

Stephanie,

Now it's been so long since I read it that I can't remember details of any mature themes. Was there someone she converted or ministered to that led a sinful life? Maybe. There is mention of the sort of violence resulting in death or killing that was part of the medieval Italian feuding. I don't recall any of it being graphic though. Mostly I remember her intimate relationship with God, her self-mortification, her service to others, her humility, and her influence over those around her just due to her example and wise exhortations.
You might preview it just to be able to discuss with your daughter.
