Is anyone familiar with this series? My daughter just got a raving recommendation from one of her homeschool friends, but I'm hoping to hear some practical review before I decide whether to let her read them. She is 11.

Here is a review from Common Sense Media. It's my go-to site when I'm not sure about a book or movie.

well.... i took a look at common sense media, and saw that Twilight was one of their "Best Books" recommendation... major cause of alarm for me, though there were a couple other books that i looked at and the reviews seemed more spot-on. am i right in thinking it's a secular site? maybe that's why we need more Catholic reviewers :)
hm... i would LOVE a 4Real book review site... where we can all input books and everyone can rate them kinda like the way common sense media does it!

That is a great idea Stef! There is www.love2learn.net but most of their book reviews are homeschool related. I'd love to see a site where kid fiction was reviewed through a Catholic lens.
There are a number of Catholic homeschool blogs that occasionally reviews such books (mine included) but nothing that I can think of that completely devotes time to book reviews on a very regular basis.
Okay, so who's got the talent and time to start 4Real Community Book Reviews? :-)
Blessings,
Maureen :)

There are a couple of Catholic sites that I posted here before, one by a Catholic mom (with Vatican flag ratings!) and another by a Catholic dad (I'll add the link later when I have more time to search), and I've got my own (sporadic) book review site up there (homeschooler's book blog).
It would be really nice if we could have one with ratings/stars and space for comments. I'll look for plugins for Wordpress -- maybe those would work. Unless others chime in with ideas.

The Pendragon series is really good, imo. I haven't read it since college, though, so I can't really speak for age appropriateness. The author is not Catholic, but the books are very Catholic, if that makes sense. Here is an in depth review of the book by Brad Birzer. It isn't really an "is this appropriate for kids" review, but it my be helpful in your discernment.

Thinking back, and rereading Mr. Birzer's review, I have this vague idea that its not really appropriate for 11. It is excellent, but I'm just thinking that it would be too much for 11. I'd save it a few years, I think. However, Mr. Birzer is a Catholic father of 6 and a professor at Hillsdale college. He is a kind and generous man, and I have no doubt that were you to contact him via his blog, he'd be more than happy to offer you insight regarding the age appropriateness of Mr. Lawhead's works.

Thank you for the responses! I appreciate your feedback.
Here is a link for one Catholic Reviewer (I'm sure I got this link here on 4Real): Review but she doesn't have a review of Pendragon.
Adding this link: another Catholic reviewer (this is the one that gives 'Vatican Flags'). I'm sure I also got this link here at 4Real Book reviews This one doesn't review Pendragon either.
Based on the reviews here, I think we'll put this low on our queue of books to be read.

Crunchymom, I clicked on your link, but it doesn't go to a review of Pendragon - it is a book titled Avalon. I did a search of the blog, with no results.

I think that the book Avalon is part of The Pendragon Cycle and the books that are called Pendragon are newer books geared for teens. Avalon looks great for my 15yo :) Personally, I wouldn't touch the new ones though, if you want my humble opinion. Looking them up at my library gave me all the info I needed for that. Thanks for the tip on Avalon!

Aha! Yes, I didn't realize that there was another series with that name.
Avalon is a later book in the series I referenced. I'd start with the first Definitely appropriate for 15.
