OK, all you Laura Ingalls Wilder pro's -- I have a question for you. I'm pre-reading the books in the series and in The Long Winter there is a discussion of a bird that Pa found in the hay after the first big blizzard when they're still up near the Big Slough.

It is described as "exactly like the picture [except smaller]of the great auk in Pa's big green book, The Wonders of the Animal World. It had the same white breast and black back and wings, the same short legs placed far back, and the same large, webbed feet. It stood straight up on its short legs like a tiny man with black coat and trousers and white shirt front, and its little black wings were like arms." They never saw the bird again once they set it free.

I ask as I have no idea what kind of bird this is. And I KNOW that my dear little ones will want to know.

Any guesses?

I guess what LIW was getting at is that the blizzard was so long and so powerful that it blew this little bird off course -- cuz it is prevalent in the British Isles!

This would be such a great rabbit trail......

The Ancient Murrrlet is a likely candidate. This article indicates that it is a rare but known visitor to South Dakota. These along with the Dovekie are members of the same family as the Great Auk.
