Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was introduced to this series by a friend (and also through MODG). I read the first 3 books with my girls and found them beyond delightful. My friend that introduced them to me recently told me that she just found out the 5th book "Heaven to Betsy" contains a Ouija board I went to trusty ol' Amazon and did a search and sure enough it is in there and I didn't like at all the way it was handled. As best as I could tell the children do not learn that it is wrong to dabble in the occult.

I did some searches on here could not find this mentioned in any of the threads. I just wanted to give a heads up for those of you who were not aware of this issue.

Beth

That's true - I had forgotten about the Ouija board.

Basically, the teens (they are 14 and 15 at this point, not young children) use a Ouija board at a series of get-togethers and it "predicts" trouble for Betsy, the main character. Trouble does come, but it's the routine kind - sprained ankle, the boy she likes gets a crush on someone else - certainly nothing out of the ordinary that could really be caused only by a supernatural or occult interference in the world.

Thanks, Beth - I'm sure many parents here will appreciate this information, so they can decide how to handle that particular book in their homes.

Thanks for the heads-up. It reminds me of some of series like Trixie Belden or Nancy Drew when a book would deal with fortune-telling or some other occult stuff. We would discuss it, and read it with a discerning eye.

I have also heard that there is some interest in boys expressed in the later book or books, that may be something you want to be aware of.

Yes, there is, because the books take her through high school and her first year of marriage. Betsy is the type of girl who won't even hold hands with a boy, though - the series is set in the early 1900s. She is (chastely) kissed by three boys (young men, really) in the entire series. Nothing else, I promise!
