Our only boy is four years old, and, with four older sisters, our picture book collection for the younger children is overwhelmingly feminine. The most masculine thing in the house is "Madeline and the Bad Hat"!
I'd love to hear opinions on boyhood classics, preferably picture books, that absolutely should not be missed.

I'm all eyes  for this thread! I grew up in a family of mostly girls who dominated the reading material. Now I have my young son and want to make sure I steer him in the right direction!

My 6 yo ds loves Curious George. I have the treasury and that's the book we read over and over.
Snowy Day and other Ezra Jack Keats stories.
Babar books are another favorite, along with Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel and last but not least, Henry and Mudge.

We love all these! We also have added Thomas the Tank Engine stories to our lineup (thanks, Mary G!)
All of Tomie De Paola books are appealing. I think many are masculine in character...good reading for all ages.

Oh, goodness! My 4 yr old dd loves Curious George.
I read it to her in Adoration yesterday. Shhhh...don't tell.
Seriously, I read her a book in Adoration then she knows she has to be quiet and either color or look through her picture books.
It's a working deal that works.

Two thumbs up for anything Tomie dePaola. Let's see...ds is 14 so I have to really think. He always enjoyed nonfiction books about his favorite topics (trains, airplanes, outer space). The Five In A Row book suggestions are overwhelmingly popular at our house (even now, when ds IS 14!). I think I memorized every Thomas the Tank Engine book and video!

Alice all of the Billy and Blaze books by C.W. Anderson have been favorites of Benjamin's for ages, infact he learned to read them to himself at age 5!! Now of course at 4 Elijah is wanting them for his own!
Others my boys love are: All the Frog and Toad books by Arnold Lobel, great on audio as he reads them himself, they are hysterical.
Robert McClosky's books
Jan Brett is big here, try The First Dog
Velveteen Rabbit is also enjoyed, especially on tape for bedtime as it is read by Meryl Streep
Hope this gives you a few more ideas. My boys also love Farmer boy, although it is not a picture book

Dr Seuss was a big hit with ds at that age, especially "One Fish, Two Fish..." and "Horton Hatches the Egg," other favorites were "Is Your Mama a Llama?" (forget the author, but it is awesome) "My Grandma Lived in Gooligulch" (Graham Base). He really liked anything that had silly or rhyming, rhythmic language. That was way more important to him than the story line and kept his attention much better.

We all love Richard Scarry, but my boy especially used to LOVE looking at all the pictures in books such as "What Do People Do All Day" and "Cars and Trucks and Things that Go".
When older, the Danny Dunn series is a great series for all, but especially for boys.

I remember a few books my brother from a young age used to pore over. I was 15 years older, so I'd try to supply some, although I was a little clueless:
2 were Landmark Books, "Story of D-Day" and "Swamp Fox of the American Revolution"
American Boys Handybook he would read over and over again.
Plus anything that had riddles, jokes, magic tricks, how-to books, he loved those!

Just pulled out our Johnny Appleseed book and remembered how much our boys love American folklore and tall tales like the ones by Steven Kellog (Pecos Bill, Paul Bunyan etc.).
