Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We may have an opportunity to visit our largest (and possibly most fascinating) state in the next year or so. I'd love to give my daughter the chance to learn about Alaska via living books. I feel confident that I will find some good resources here!

(Field guide recommendations are also welcome, Theresa!)

!!!!!
You're coming to Alaska?!!??!!!
COOL!!!!
Do you know what part of AK you'll be visiting because, of course it's a BIG state and the field guides will vary according to where you are. And if you come to Sitka you can have a personal guide.

As far as literature for that age...
ummm...
I'm pretty clueless. I even asked Sam and he says he can't remember anything good for that age.
Lots of little kid and picture books. Lots of grown-up books. Nothing for middle school.
Wait. I remember one:
Rivers: Diary of a Blind Alaska Racing Sled Dog by Mike Dillingham. That one I think was pretty good.Kind of "cutesy" but ok.
Also, there is always White Fang, right?
The best thing (and what I do) is to wait til you get here and hit the local book stores. They will have the appropriate field guides and also lots of local literature selections.

Oh, yes, Jack London has a lot. You could do some short stories as well.

Walt Morey has several Alaska books - including Gentle Ben, which was the basis of the 1960's television show. The TV series strayed a bit from the book by moving the location from Alaska to Florida - which seems a bit crazy, don't you think...? - But could also represent Theresa's recent moves...

Jean Craighead George has several set in Alaska. Julie and the Wolves is probably the most well known, and there are some cautions to be aware of -Love2Learn review by Willa.

There are lots of books listed in the Iditarod thread. I learned a lot about Alaska with all of our Iditarod picture books! Lots of history in them!

And, I've also learned about Alaska reading my husband's collection of mountain climbing books.   I'll see if I can find some favorites at some point.

Here are some others (not nec. considering the age you're asking for....as some you may be more interested in):
:: Tisha
:: When the Water Runs
:: Looking for Alaska
:: The Last Frontier
:: Arctic Homestead - a friend read this and said it was good.
:: Michener's Alaska.

And, The Year of Miss Agnes.

I remember Gentle Ben! (No, I did not know the book was set in Alaska...I will have to look for it!)

Theresa, I don't think we're coming to Sitka. This is a family cruise (my parents' 50th anniversary) and so I think our itinerary is pretty standard. It will be fun, though - my dd is hoping to see seals and whales and other marine mammals, too.

Another Alaskan Inuit book I read recently was Dog Song by Gary Paulsen.

At the risk of tomatoes, I'm going to admit both Inuit books I have read I found very boring. In both these books the characters are very solitary and the writing seems more like a monologue. I'm sure not all Inuit books are like this, I'd be interested if anyone can recommend better titles.
