Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Is anyone familiar with this author? I did a search for her in living literature and see that some of her books are being reprinted.

We've read Mission to Cathay and my daughter really enjoyed it. I recently purchased Flame over Tara as part of our history readers for this year.

Is she a Catholic author? Would you recommend all of her books - or are there some we should skip?

Thanks!

I L-O-V-E Madeleine Polland. She is one of my all time favorite authors. She is able to write a REAL story for historical fiction, not just a contrived situation so that you can read a book set in a particular time period. Here are the ones I know about, and they are for kids:

City of the Golden House (we publish that)
Chuiraquimba and the Black Robes (we publish this one, too, about to come out) You can see the art for the new cover on our blog
Children of the Red King (her first one for children - we'll have it out by Christmas)
The Queen's Blessing (set in time of St. Margaret of Scotland - very realistic, no sugar coating)
To Kill a King (sequel to Queen's Blessing, maybe for older kids - 8th or 9th grade and up. Includes a kind of find-your-true-vocation element)
To Tell my People (Roman Empire Britain)
The Town Across the Water (poor side of town wins justice against oppressive bad guys)

Of course you've mentioned the other 2 that are in print: Beorn the Proud and Mission to Cathay. I'm not sure about Flame over Tara. Do we believe that St. Patrick performed miracles, or, as she seems to propose, did he simply take advantage of better knowledge of natural world. It's a fine line - no doubt that God is working through him and he is portrayed as a holy man. I think perhaps she wanted a clear contrast between him and the Druid magicians. And once again a real story, this time about a girl who runs away from her foster family and an arranged marriage to follow Patrick.

I love when we highlight authors on this forum! I was just browsing a used bookstore and found City of the Golden House in hb. But I grabbed it because I recognized the author's name because of this thread.

Wish it was another one that wasn't being reprinted, but it's my first MP book. There's still time.

I think I read by author quite frequently, like a glutton who can't get enough. I find a book I like and want to see more by the author and/or illustrator. My son is now making those connections. I've introduced him to a few David Macaulay books, including picture books. But yesterday he came into the kitchen holding another favorite book "The Way Things Work" and so excited because it's by David Macaulay, too!
