Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hello,

I received three different sets of books from a friend. I am particular about the books my children read (I weed out anti-Catholic material and/or other harmful materials), but I don't have the time to read through all these volumes before handing them on to the kids. Does anyone know anything about:

My Book House - ed. Olive Beaupre Miller (12 vols)

A Picturesque Tale of Progress - ed. Olive Beaupre Miller (9 vols)

The Children's Hour - ed. Marjorie Barrows (16 vols).

Any information you can share with me about any of the above sets would be useful. Thanks for your help!!

Christine

My Book House is great and I've never seen anything anti-Catholic. The stories are well-done and lots of fun to read. If you have an older set, they have the original Sambo story, which some may find offensive.

I haven't seen or used the others.

Hope this helps.

Love the Book House series. I picked up the whole set second-hand and give it a huge thumbs-up.

I recently received "The Children's Hour" from my sister from when she was younger. She endorsed it to me, and from what I've seen, I've been impressed.

I have both of these sets. They came to me from my grandparents who were very careful with what they purchased. And they got them in the '50's when the Church was still reviewing a lot of what was out there. I certainly haven't come across anything objectionable in the first 4 volumes of either series, that's as far as I've read personally.

Thanks for the input, everyone! From what I've read here, I think I'll put out the My Book House series first to be "discovered." I'll put the others out eventually too. Thanks for sharing! The thought of going over all those volumes myself seemed overwhelming.

God bless,
Christine
