We're working through the Little House books here and just started Long Winter. My kids are totally in love with the books which is so fun for me since I am as well--maybe even more than when I first read them as a girl.
Anyway, they asked me yesterday to pull out the rest of the series for them to see and I've been flipping through re-reading favorite passages. My question: Isn't there a Christmas where they go to a town Christmas tree and Laura gets an unsigned gift of a hair brush and comb and Pa thinks it is from Almanzo? I can't find this story anywhere. Am I making this up? Anyone know which book it is in?

It's in Little Town on the Prairie.

Ah yes. Notice I clicked on the "frivolous" and "Little House" thread. What does that say of me?
Reading (books on tape) the Little House books to my son who was only 5, I felt the books took a different feel as they progressed, older themes. We stopped after reading four, as I thought I could wait a little. Thinking he needs to hear "The Long Winter" soon, though, for this winter.
Growing up I would start at Little Town on the Prairie because it was the beginning of the "romantic stuff." Gosh, I love that series -- I read it SOOOO many times.

Me too, Jenn. I always liked the love story growing up. We thought our kids would lose interest by now but they were excited all the way through Silver Lake and we just started Long Winter last night. We'll see how far we get.
And, thank you for responding Nancy. These are the questions that drive me nuts I just went through every chapter of Little Town (that's where I thought that story was, too) while my sick little boy was nursing and couldn't find the story. I was wondering if my vintage hard back was somehow an abridged edition when I picked up Golden Years and found it. That Christmas tree is described almost as a throw-away in the last few paragraphs of a chapter on breaking the colts Skip and Barnum. Now my mind can rest easy

I learned so much from this article about Laura and Rose's lives. Kind of sad, but fills in the story:
